As we approach the final days before the Large Hadron Collider starts its mission, we start seeing more and more titles that point towards the end of the world, literally, with black holes destroying humankind and our planet. But how true is that? Logically speaking, why would we want to destroy our own planet? That just doesn't sound right, and I don't think the scientific community would engage in a dangerous experiment just for the fun of it! The scary part of all this doesn't actually come from the scientists involved in the experiment, but from people around the world, who've sent them...

The hurricane season is far from being over, and September
is likely to bring at least five more named storms, four of which will become
hurricanes, William Gray and Phil Klotzbach from Colorado State University’s
forecast team revealed.
Although they said this should not be considered as a new
seasonal forecast, their predictions don’t look very promising. Two of the four
expected hurricanes are said to turn into major ones, category 3-4-5, all amid
a hurricane activity at about 190 percent of the September average.
Phil Klotzbach explained that September should be quite
active...

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency rejected the Yahoo
Pumps Project proposal for the Mississippi Delta, after concluding that the negative
environmental impact would be far greater than the economic benefits. The agency
vetoed the proposal under the Clean Water Act (CWA), which prohibits the use of

unacceptable effects on municipal water supplies, shellfish beds and fishery
areas, wildlife, or recreational areas.
“Together with our state and federal partners we can improve

A study published Tuesday in the Proceedings of the National
Academy of Scientists reveals that the decade which ended in 2006 was the warmest
time period in the Northern Hemisphere in the last 1,300 years or more.
The study was conducted by a team of researchers led by
climatologist Michael Mann, the one who, in 1998, helped develop the „hockey
stick”graph, which is a diagram of the temperature behavior of the past 1000
years showing that, during reccent decades, temperatures have reached
unprecedented values.
The study showed that the average temperature between 1996
and 2006...

Scientists
have recently discovered that, due to global warming and its heating effect on
oceans, hurricanes are likely to become both more frequent and more intense.
Published
in Thursday’s issue of the journal
Nature, a study conducted by a team of
researchers led by hurricane scientist at the Florida State University James
Elsner, showed that climate change registered during the past 25 years had
really affected storms, rendering them stronger.
Satellite data from 1981 through 2006, a 25-year period in which sea
surface temperature registered a rise from 82.8 degrees...
