An end to a costly and bitter presidential election prompted widespread buying on Wall Street as a cloud of uncertainty was lifted.
The Dow jumped 305 points, or 3.9 percent, to 9,625.The S&P rallied 39 points, or 4 percent, to 1,005.The Nasdaq added 53 points, a gain of 3.1 percent, to 1,780.
Crude oil prices surged $6.62 to $70.53 a barrel, a rise of more than 10 percent.
