Civilians are struck down on the main street of Gori as Russian troops moved deeper into Georgian territory.
This video shows the centre of Gori as it comes under bombardment on Tuesday, in an attack which killed at least five civilians, including a journalist and injured several others.Broadcaster RTL said on Tuesday Dutch cameraman Stan Storimans had been killed during the attack and another Dutch correspondent had been wounded. The Reuters crew car was forced to speed through the town centre as it came under attack. The street was near hillside areas where Russian aircraft had earlier attacked Georgian artillery positions above the town. A Reuters reporter said the explosions came without warning as they were driving through the virtually deserted streets. The attack which took place before Russian President Dmitry Medvedev ordered a halt to military operations, set buildings alight and engulfed parts of the town in black smoke. A Reuters photographer said that after the bombing he saw five bodies and four wounded people in the street, and recognised two of them as journalists. "The bombs hit in front of us and beside us," the reporter said. "Several people were wounded and lying in the street. We got straight out of there." In Moscow, Colonel-General Anatoly Nogovitsyn, deputy head of the General Staff, denied Russian forces had attacked the town.
