The storm triggered widespread flooding in the Dominican Republic on Wednesday (3 September) and also wreaked havoc on neighbouring Haiti. In Santo Domingo, palm trees bent and twisted wildly in the wind and traffic was disrupted as city streets flooded. Several of the capital's neighbourhoods also flooded. But Civil Defence authorities said preventative measures had been taken to evacuate thousands, and that they would receive help to clean their homes upon return. Hanna was forecast to move over the central and northern Bahamas on Thursday, strengthening back into a hurricane before hitting the U.S. coast near the North Carolina-Virginia border on Saturday (September 6).
