The kidnapping of Afghanistan's top envoy to Pakistan has deepened the crisis gripping Pakistan, two days after a suicide bomb destroyed the Marriott hotel in the capital, leaving scores dead.
The attack on Afghanistan's next ambassador to Pakistan is another sign of the growing militancy that threatens to engulf Pakistan. Gunmen kidnapped the envoy, killing his driver, in the capital of Pakistan's volatile North-Western Frontier Province (NWFP), where security has deteriorated alarmingly during the past year. The latest incident comes as tensions mount between Pakistan and the U.S. over their failure to develop a common strategy to rooting out the insurgents, who use Pakistan's lawless tribal region as a springboard to launch attacks in Afghanistan and increasingly in Pakistan.
