With the Sri Lankan military now in control of Pooneryn it gives them land access up the north-west coast to Jaffna. The peninsula has been cut off since 1983 by the Tamil Tiger rebels which has been waging a violent campaign against the government. The organisation wants to create a sovereign Tamil state in the north and east of Sri Lanka. Liz Kennedy reports.SOUNDBITE: Mahinda Rajapaksa, Sri Lankan President.
