Wall Street suffered a major setback on Thursday as speculation about a U.S. plan to invest in troubled banks failed to lift persistent worries of a global recession.
The Dow dropped 678 points, or 7.3 percent, to 8,579. The S&P 500 lost 75 points, or 7.6 percent, to 909.
