Afghan President Hamid Karzai is calling for peace and is reaching out a hand to the Taliban.
More than 2,700 people including some 1,100 civilians have been killed in Afghanistan this year, according to aid agencies.Deborah Lutterbeck reports.SOUNDBITES: Afghan President Hamid Karzai, saying (Dari): "Those of our brothers, those Afghan Taliban who are afraid, or for whatever reason have left their country and have taken up arms against their country and people, I hope they will return to their homeland. A few days ago I called upon their leader, Mullah Omar, and said 'My brother, my dear, come back to your homeland, come and work for the peace and good of your people."
