Militants in Nigeria are threatening to broaden their "oil war" to offshore oil fields, after attacking another Shell-operated oil flow station in the Niger Delta. Groups like MEND (the Movement for Emancipation of the Niger Delta) have used popular anger against the government and multinational oil company to recruit hundreds if not thousands of young men to attack oil installations in the region. The dire social conditions have also spawned scores of armed gangs, including many who make a living by kidnapping and holding for ransom local and foreign oil workers.Sonia Legg reports.
