German Chancellor Angela Merkel tries to maintain a delicate balance between Western and Russian interests. Merkel's shuttle diplomacy has underscored just how high the stakes of the conflict are for Germany, both an ally of the United States and increasingly close economic partner of Russia. Benet Allen reports.German Chancellor Angela Merkel speaking in German with English translation: "I met President Medvedev on Friday and he had agreed that as soon as the documents were available the Russian trops withdrawal would begin. The documents were signed yesterday so we are looking for signals in days rather than weeks and after our return we will use the opportunity to speak to the Russian side and to demand the fulfillment of this promise because I think not only Georgia, but the whole workld is waiting for the troops to actually withdraw."
