Karzai backs US cross-border plan

Afghan President Hamid Karzai has backed a proposed U.S. strategy that would involve hitting al Qaeda and Taliban militants in neighbouring Pakistan. But NATO, which operates in Afghanistan under a U.N. mandate, said its forces wouldn't take part in any cross-border action. Pakistan bans incursions by U.S. troops. Violence in Afghanistan has soared over the past two years as al Qaeda and Taliban fighters have regrouped, establishing strongholds in Pakistan's tribal regions. Helen Long reports.
