More than a hundred thousand people from all over Korea, and beyond, brave sub-degree temperatures to fish for trout at a frozen lake.
The Sancheoneo Festival drew a hundred thousand people on Saturday (January 17) to Hwacheon, 120 kilometers north of the capital Seoul in the Northern Gangwon Province.
The Sancheoneo Festival, which began on January 10 and runs for 20 days is taken very seriously by all who participate.
Not everyone has the skill or patience for ice-fishing so others prefer to wade in icy water to catch the fish with their bare hands and stuff them down their shirt before heading to the barbecue with their catch.
The organisers say that over 1 million visitors come every year to try and catch the trout that can only live in waters with a temperature below 20 degrees Celsius.
