A Palestinian rights group is asking the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague to investigate Israel for committing war crimes during its 19-day-old assault on the
Gaza Strip.
About 170 people gathered outside the ICC as lawyers initiated the procedure.
ICC officials were handed a 25-page complaint calling on them
go to Gaza and investigate the "death and injury of hundreds of
Palestinians, including women and children".
ICC officials declined to comment on the petition or whether it would
immediately respond.
The Palestinian death toll from the Gaza offensive rose to 1,010 on
Wednesday and the Palestinian Centre for Human
Rights said more than 670 of the dead were civilians.
Israel says 10 soldiers,
and three civilians hit by Hamas cross-border rockets, have been killed.
