Hamas announces an immediate ceasefire by its fighters and allied groups in the Gaza Strip and gives Israel a week to pull out its troops as the Pope describes the sistuation as "unheard of violence".
Hamas said in a statement it was ready to cooperate with Egypt's efforts for the calm to hold. The announcement followed an Israeli unilateral ceasefire.
Within hours, 14 rockets were fired into southern Israel, wounding one person.
Israel moves to gives supplies and a field hospital to Gazan residents caught up in the violence as leaders meet for a summit in Egypt to discuss the situation.
