The UN says tens of thousands of children have been orphaned in the wake of four consecutive hurricanes: Fay, Gustav, Hanna and Ike.
More than 800,000 people have been stranded in Haiti. At least 300,000 are thought to be children. Gonaives, the scene of devastating floods triggered by Tropical Storm Jeanne in 2004, was once again the worst hit city. Several neighbourhoods are still under water.
