Israeli PM-designate Tzipi Livni abandons her efforts to form a new coalition government and says she is instead recommending early elections. But the Kadima party chief's failure to clinch a coalition deal in negotiations with Shas, an ultra-Orthodox party that traditionally makes or breaks multi-factional governments, means her bid to become Israel's second woman prime minister will pass through the ballot box. When isn't clear but commentators say a mid-February election is likely. That would be a year ahead of schedule. Susan Flory reports.
