Wall Street ended a tough week with optimism after reports President-elect Barack Obama had chosen his person to help fight the financial crisis.
The Dow gained 494 points, or 6.5 percent, to 8,046. The S&P 500 surged 47 points, a gain of 6.3 percent, to 800. The Nasdaq rallied 68 points, or 5.1 percent, to 1,384.
Crude oil prices rose slightly to $49.93 a barrel.
