Thousands of people turned out in fancy dress in German city of Cologne to mark the start of the carnival season. The four-month carnival season, commonly known as the Fifth Season of the year, kicked off at 11:11 a.m. (1011 GMT) on the eleventh day of the eleventh month with three chants of "Alaaf! Alaaf! Alaaf!" It is believed the expression originates from "Koellen all aff," meaning "Cologne rules".
