Britain's Prime Minister Gordon Brown urged the international community to ensure that Congo did not become another Rwanda, a reference to the 1994 genocide. The French and British foreign ministers said on Sunday (Nov 2) that a ceasefire between government forces and rebels in the Congo must be strengthened but only a serious political effort could avert a worse crisis. David Miliband and Bernard Kouchner called on the governments of the Democratic Republic of Congo and neighbouring Rwanda to honour their commitments under a previous peace deal. The U.N. is hoping to open an aid corridor to bring urgently needed food and medical supplies to help more than a quarter-of-a-million people displaced by fighting. Helen Long reports.
