Business Update:Jobless ranks swell

The number of Americans stuck on the unemployment roll hit a record, according to data from the Labor Department, and new layoffs at Starbucks and Kodak are sure to add thousands more. New home sales fell to a record low in December and orders for large tickets were down as well. Ford will not need a government loan despite a fourth-quarter loss, the company said Thursday. 3M saw profits and sales drop amid the global economic downturn. Wall Street traded lower on weak corporate profits and worries about the next step in the economic stimulus debate. Conway Gittens reports from New York.
