South Africa's political rift widens as a prominent ANC defector warns the ruling party could usher in apartheid-era laws aimed at crushing state institutions. Dissident members of South Africa's governing African National Congress are meeting in Johannesburg to discuss the formation of a breakaway movement. The holding of the convention marks a dramatic shake-up in South African politics, which has been dominated by the ANC since the end of apartheid in 1994, when the party brought Nelson Mandela to the country's presidency.
