Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas says he will call for elections in 2009 if his Fatah movement and rivals Hamas are not reconciled by the end of the year. Mahmoud Abbas fired the the Hamas-led government after the Islamist group seized control of the Gaza strip in 2007, driving out Fatah loyalists. The two groups blame each other for an ongoing rift between the Palestinians and for obstructing Abbas' efforts to negotiate peace with Israel. Hamas won a majority of seats in the 2006 parliamentary elections. Basmah Fahim reports.
