AU condemns Somali rebel attacks

Somali rebel assaults on African Union peacekeepers are being branded as a 'calculated provocation' by the AU. African Union peacekeeping troops have been killed in Somalia as a result of increasing attacks from rebels, which analysts say could be a tactic to deter further foreign intervention in the area. The Islamists, whom Washington links to Al Qaeda, are of the view that the AU force is propping up the government. The rebels are waging a rebellion on the UN backed interim government, and its Ethiopian military allies. Basmah Fahim
