Ruslana Korshunova, a 20-year-old supermodel born in Kazakhstan, fell to her death from her Manhattan apartment
building on Saturday afternoon in what appears to be a suicide.
According to the local media reports and police sources,
there are witnesses who saw Ruslana Korshunova plunge from a ninth-floor
balcony in the building where she had an apartament.
It is unknown if anyone had been in her Water Street condo or if she left a
suicide note. According to the witnesses, the incident occurred around
2:30 p.m.
One of her friends, who have spoken with The New York Post
said that Ruslana Korshunova had just returned from a modeling gig in Paris. He noted that she
seemed to be "on top of the world" and there is no apparent reason
why she would commit suicide.
Ruslana Korshunova was born on July 2, 1987 in Almaty the largest
city of the former Soviet republic Kazakhstan. According to her biography from Fashion Model Directory,
Debbie Jones, the senior booker at Models 1, a London-based modeling agency,
discovered Ruslana Korshunova in 2003. She quickly became famous for her long
hair and her fairytale look.
"I saw her by chance and she looked like something out
of a fairytale! [..] She's really incredible with feline features and timeless
beauty," said Debbie Jones in a Vogue profile about Ruslana published in
2005.
Ruslana Korshunova was represented by IMG modeling agency in
New York, Paris,
London and Milan. She appeared on the cover of the French magazine Elle in
2005 and on the cover of Vogue in Russia
and Poland.
During her career, she walked the catwalks for
designers like Kenzo, Vera Wang, and she was featured in ads for Blugirl by
Blumarine, Clarins, Ghost,
Girbaud, Kenzo Accessories, Marithé & François, Max Studio,
Moschino, Pantene Always Smooth and
Paul Smith.
The city police, quoted by Newsday,
said that there was no sign of struggle in Korshunova’s condo, but an investigation
is underway.
A spokesperson of IMG has spoken with the Daily News. "We're
shocked and our heart goes out to her family," she said, but declined to
comment further.
