ooma Reinvents The Phone Service: Domestic Calls For Free!

A Silicon Valley start-up, ooma, plans to ignite a new revolution in the telecommunications industry with a new device that enables unlimited U.S. domestic calls via a broadband connection to any wireless or wireline phone number. Also international calls will be charged at rates similar to other VoIP services like Skype.

In fact ooma is a VoIP sevice, but unlike other providers, it allows users to keep their current phone number ant it is integrated with the regular phones as a backup.

All you need is a so-called ooma Hub connected to your broadband connection and your primary phone, and an ooma Scout for each additional active phone extension you use in your house.

Once ooma Hub is connected you are ready to use the service. The price of ooma Hub is $399 and the company chargers antoher $39 for Scout.

ooma was founded in 2005 by Andrew Frame and since then the company has been developing the ooma hardware and software with a team of engineers.

“I believe that consumers should have a better phone experience, one that combines convenience, innovation and cost savings,” said Frame. “Just as consumers transformed the functionality of their television through TiVo and their music with the iPod, we expect that they will reinvent the way they use their home phone with an ooma system.”

Until now ooma has been tested by its engineers and 150 beta-testers, but the company hopes to raise the awarness about its product with an invitation-based system called White Rabbit.

Each recipient, or White Rabbit, receives a complete ooma system for his or her home, including three ooma “pass along chips” to send to friends. The “pass along chips” prompt the recipient to go to http://go.ooma.com to enter the code on the chip and register to receive a free ooma system.

ooma has secured $27 million in venture funding from, among others, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, The Founder’s Fund, Worldview Partners, Draper-Richards and WI Harper.
