A new study commissioned by the American
Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), the world’s
largest specialty association that represents over 2,700 facial plastic and
reconstructive surgeons throughout the world, revealed that 85 percent of adult
Americans would undergo a facial plastic surgery procedure if given the chance.
The survey also reported a 27 percent increase in surgical and non-surgical
activity among men and women since 2000.
Eyelifts, neck surgeries, nose jobs, facial
enhancements, such as facelifts, and breast surgery are the most popular
surgical procedures. Breast uplifts are increasingly carried out to redress the
effects of breast-feeding and pregnancy on women’s shape. Nose jobs were the
most popular surgical procedures chosen by men.
The study also showed that the majority of
people look for an experienced, certified facial plastic surgeon over
generalists when it comes to facial plastic surgery. Eighty-three percent of
women believe that facial plastic surgeons are more competent to treat their
faces, heads, or necks than a general plastic surgeon.
The number of non-surgical procedures also rose,
with a particular surge in demand for Botox and collagen wrinkle fillers. These
non-invasive procedures have become much more popular because they are seen as
less risky.
According to the latest procedural statistics
report released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), almost 12
million cosmetic plastic surgery procedures were performed in 2007. The report
found the top five surgical procedures were breast augmentation, liposuction, nose
reshaping, eyelid surgery, and tummy tuck.
The study suggests there is still potential
for further growths in the number of people having plastic surgeries.
However, the AAFPRS recommends people
considering cosmetic surgery to consider the potential side-effects of the
procedures and select their surgeon with care.
