iTunes Store customers will be
able to purchase the latest movie titles on the same day they appear on DVD,
Apple unveiled on Thursday, expanding its previous rent-only service. Four
major music film studios, as well as premier independent studios, will
contribute to the iTunes Store movie library with their latest titles.
“We’re thrilled to bring iTunes
Store customers new films for purchase day-and-date with DVD release,” Eddy
Cue, Apple’s vice president of iTunes, said in a statement. “We think movie
fans will love being able to buy their favorites from major and independent
studios.”
The movie catalog will include
releases from 20th Century Fox, The Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros., Paramount
Pictures, Universal Studios Home Entertainment, Sony Pictures Entertainment,
Lionsgate, Image Entertainment and First Look Studios.
Starting this week, iTunes Store
customers will be able to purchase titles such as “American Gangster” and “The
Diving Bell and the Butterfly” at the same time with their DVD release, as well
as other titles: “Juno,” “Cloverfield,” “I Am Legend,” “There Will Be Blood,” “Alvin
and the Chipmunks” and “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story,” Apple unveiled.
iTunes Movies will be available
in the United States alone, with prices starting from $9.99 for library title
purchases and $14.99 for new releases (or $2.99 for library rentals and $3.99
for new release rentals).
The movies will also be
available for high definition rentals, $3.99 for library titles and $4.99 for
new releases. The titles can be viewed on iPod Classic, iPod nano with video,
iPod touch, iPhone and widescreen TV with Apple TV.
The iTunes Store is one of
the most popular destinations for online music, becoming the No. 1 U.S. music retailer.
Its library includes over six million songs, 600 TV shows and 1,500 films.
