According to a recent study by research firm iSuppli, the smart phone industry is among the few markets that are in this year. Despite the global economic slowdown that seriously affects the phone sales, Smartphonia seems to govern its self by other laws.
The report from the applied market intelligence company predicted that smartphone sales will increase between 6 and 11 percent. Of course, the research firm is certainly referring to those devices that pack computer-like applications such as operating systems and apps. iSuppli is talking Apple iPhone, RIM’s BlackBerry and other smartphones that measure up to these industry behemoths.
When it says smartphones, iSuppli means handsets running the latest mobile operating systems such as Apple’s iPhone OS, Microsoft’s Windows Mobile, Nokia’s Symbian, Research in Motion’s BlackBerry OS, Google’s Android, Palm OS and other Linux-based systems
The unit sales of smart phones are expected to increase from 173.6 million to 192.8 million. Consequently, depending on the growth rate, the total share of the smartphones in the mobile phones market will also grow from 13.8 percent to about 17.4 percent.
Meanwhile, the near future looks more than gloomy for the rest of the handset industry. iSuppli forecasts that the market will fall from 1.26 billion units in 2008 to 1.11 billion units in 2009. Strategy Analytics, another market research firm, has about the same forecast and said the overall sales in the handset industry will decrease by 12 percent in 2009.
