TeliaSonera, an European telecom operator, disclosed Tuesday that it had signed a deal with Apple to offer the popular mobile Phone to its subscribers in Scandinavia and Baltic States.
The device will be available latter this year in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. TeliaSonera has not given any other details of the deal, and it is yet unknown whether this iPhone will be the 3G one whose arrival everybody awaits.
The deal comes as part of Apple’s strategy to expand to other markets beside the American one. The Cupertino, California, based company has signed a deal with Orange earlier this month, which will make the iPhone available in several European countries, including Austria, Belgium, Poland, Romania and Portugal. Orange will be the exclusive dealer of the popular device in Belgium and Romania.
Apple has already reported that it has managed to sell 5.4 million iPhones since their release in the USA, and plans to sell 10 million units until the end of 2008.
The company has also made plans to hit the South American and Asian markets as well as Australia. Besides TeliaSonera and Orange, agreements have been made with Vodafone, O2, T-Mobile, Telecom Italia and Mexico City based America Movil SAB.
The fact that the iPhone will be made available to Scandinavian countries might be a sign that the upcoming Apple conference will bring the release of the 3G iPhone. The Scandinavian market is one with very high technical expectations, and it is possible that Apple will not risk releasing a mobile phone without 3G capabilities.
