Apple finally confirmed the release date of its awaited
iPhone. On Sunday, the Cupertino
company unveiled three TV-ads, showing the capabilities of Apple’s latest
gadgets: the ability to watch video, play music and display photos. The commercials
are available on the Apple’s web site.
Las month Apple confirmed it will ship iPhone in the US in June. The
4 gigabyte version will cost 499 dollars. The 8 gigabyte version will cost 599
dollars. The device features a touch-screen input technology called Multi-
Touch, controlled by sliding a finger across its touch-sensitive, 9- centimetre
(3.5-inch), 160-pixel-per-inch display. The display automatically switches
between landscape or portrait mode thanks to a built-in sensor.
The 11.6-millimetre thick device also sports a 2-megapixel
camera, headset jack, 3.5-millimetre audio jack, SIM tray, a sleep-wake switch,
speaker, microphone and an iPod dock connector. The quad-band GSM plus EDGE
phone also has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0 capabilities. Future versions will carry
3G capabilities. Apple said that iPhone will be launched in Europe,
later this year.
The companies hope to sell at least 10 million units through 2008, in
what will be a strong challenge to high-end phones from the likes of
Nokia, Samsung and Motorola.
Already AT&T Mobility LLC has received more than 1
million inquiries for Apple `s multimedia and Web-enabled cell phone.
iPhone was introduced in January this year by Steve Jobs at
MacWorld. Shortly after, Cisco sued Apple because of the iPhone name, but two
months later the two companies settled their problems, announcing a
partnership.
Last month, iPhone was again in the spotlight because the
tech site Engadget announced a possible delay. Apple dismissed the rumors,
saying that Engadget received a fake e-mail.
