Apple released the latest version of its iPhone firmware,
1.1.4, which fixes several undisclosed bugs. Unlike the latest version, the
1.1.4 firmware does not add any new features and it could be just an usual
update before the release of the widely-expected iPhone SDK.
Announced in October 2007 by Steve Jobs himself, the iPhone
SDK, which will open the phone’s platform to the third-party developers, was
scheduled to be released this month.
But so far Apple stayed mum about the fate of the SDK, but earlier
this week BusinessWeek reported that the release could be delayed to one to
three weeks.
According to the several reports, the new update, which
weighs in at over 160MB, improves the way in which content tabs will load in
the Safari browser, it fixes Bluetooth connectivity and, according to
MacRumors, some users said the camera works better.
Also, some reports from iPhone Atlas readers, indicate that
the new firmware have boosted the cell signal strength.
Also, iPhone Atlas said that unlike the previous firmware
update, the 1.1.4 can still be jailbroken. Jailbreaking is the generic name of
the hacks used to allow access to the iPhone and iPod Touch file system in
order to install third party applications. Though, iPhone Atlas noted that
“iPhones running software 1.1.4 used on unauthorized networks cannot be
artificially activated with current tools”
The update is available through iTunes for iPhone and iPod
Touch.
