In six days from now on iPhone will be on the store shelves
and the Apple’s promised mobile revolution will be ready to begin.
Since its introduction back in January during Jobs’ opening speech
at WWDC, iPhone captured a lot of attention and even few are those who really
have seen the device, everybody seems to have an opinion.
But what we know so far? Apple said that the 4 gigabyte
version will cost 499 dollars and the 8 gigabyte version will be sold for 599
dollars. The device features a touch-screen input technology called Multi-
Touch, controlled by sliding a finger across its touch-sensitive, 9-centimeter
(3.5-inch), 160-pixel-per-inch display. The display automatically switches
between landscape or portrait mode thanks to a built-in sensor.
The 11.6-millimetre thick device also sports a 2-megapixel
camera, headset jack, 3.5-millimetre audio jack, SIM tray, a sleep-wake switch,
speaker, microphone and an iPod dock connector. The quad-band GSM plus EDGE
phone also has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.0 capabilities.
Will iPhone revolutionize the mobile market? Many analysts
are certain that iPhone will change what consumers expect from the mobile
phones, but still is hard to say if Apple will win the battle with the traditional
mobile phone makers, such as Nokia, Motorola or Samsung.
In fact, there are already mobile phones that are trying to
offer the same touch-screen technology and same features as the iPhone.
HTC announced two weeks ago HTC Touch, Sony Ericcsson
introduced two new Walkman phones W960 and W910 so it seems iPhone will have to
face a tough competition. Apple is aware of how important is iPhone for its
future and in its latest update the company said it upgraded the entire top
surface of the phone, including its 3.5-inch display, from plastic to
optical-quality glass to achieve a superior level of scratch resistance and
optical clarity.
Also iPhone will feature up to 8 hours of talk time, 6 hours
of Internet use, 7 hours of video playback or 24 hours of audio playback.
But the true power of iPhone is not the hardware, but the
software. iPhone is the first phone based on Mac OS and this could mean a real
advantage in front of its competitors.
Due to its advanced software features, iPhone may change the
way people interact with their phones and this could be the real Apple’s bet.
Revolutionary or not, iPhone has already created a real
buzz. AT&T, the company which will sell iPhone in an exclusive deal, said
1.1 million potential customers had signed up on the Web site asking to be contacted
when the phone is for sale.
In fact AT&T is so sure about the consumer interest they
have hired an extra 2,000 temporary employees just to handle the iPhone launch.
In a research released earlier this month M:Metrics, a
market research firm, said that 64 percent of American mobile phone users had
heard of the iPhone and 14 percent of those would be “highly interested in
buying one.”
In his speech at WWDC, Steve Jobs said Apple hopes to sell 1
million iPhones until 2008. If Apple will meet its target it remains to be
seen, but iPhone already forced the mobile phone makers to release new models
with new features. Let’s hope that in six days iPhone will prove it has worth
the wait and the hype!
