iPhone 3G’s Enhanced By Getting Lotus Notes Support

IBM brought its contribution to the enhancement of the iPhone 3G by releasing an application that gives users support for Lotus Notes and Domino software. The application was unveiled Tuesday and it is called Lotus iNotes Ultralite. It makes it possible for its users to access e-mail, calendars and contacts directly through the Apple iPhone’s Safari browser. By going through the browser, customers access their data without leaving any information on the actual device and this is definitely a plus should your iPhone go missing.

The IBM Lotus iNotes Ultralite software  can be downloaded with no extra charge for users who already have a Lotus Notes software license and is also included with IBM's new Lotus Notes software 8.0.2, which uses 20 percent less memory than the previous version.

Other business software companies such as Oracle Corp. and SAP AG offer software for the iPhone.

Lotus Notes and Domino adoption has grown to more than 140 million licensed users worldwide, but most of these Lotus Notes mobile users are owners of RIM BlackBerrys or Nokia Symbian devices. We don’t know yet whether Apple will make their worlds crumble or not due to its becoming a new competitor. “I don’t see the iPhone as a challenger to R.I.M. as a sort of comprehensive business platform, but it is starting to enter the enterprise,” Mr. Kevin Cavanaugh, vice president of Lotus software at IBM said.

Apple took strides to ensure that the iPhone 3G was ready for corporate networks by including more security features and tightly integrating Microsoft’s s Exchange e-mail server. Steve Jobs, Apples Chief Executive said that when Apple launched back in June the iPhone 3G 35 percent of the fortune 500 companies had signed up for a trial phone.
