Google completed the update for its iGoogle homepage and the
new version improves the integration of Google Reader, Gmail and Google
Finance. iGoogle also introduced its new canvas feature, which allows gadgets
to be displayed all across the screen and will prove to be extremely useful for
tasks with Google Reader and Gmail.
The Gmail gadget allows users to perform many email tasks, without
the need to leave the iGoogle page.
From now on, iGoogle users will be able to share items
directly from the page and browse through their RSS feeds using Google Reader’s
interface. The company also used the update to bring some changes to the
iGoogle interface.
According to the company’s estimates, close to 20 percent of
all its users have crossed on to the new platform and the update, making
activities a lot easier, will surely determine many more to use it.
The iGoogle homepage doesn’t only offer the possibility to
include just Gmail and Google Reader, but also gadgets such as Movies, Sudoku
Puzzle, Music iLike, TV Guide, GasBuddy Gas Price, GoComics, The Wall Street
Journal, NY Times, Flood-it!, The Washington Post, Google Translate, YouTube
Videos, Google Finance Portfolios and Current News.
What makes this format so appealing is that iGoogle’s
gadgets provide most of the functionality of a normal Web site, which
represents a big plus for both users and gadget developers. In addition to its
utility, it also creates spaces for bigger advertising campaigns.
