âThe Exâ: Funny People, but no Humor

“The Ex” has been finally released! At first it was the release date that has been postponed for two times and then the movie title that has alternated from “Fast Track” to “The Ex”. That is why one could still be waiting for the release of “Fast Track”, that comedy that should have arrived in January and it hasn’t till now!

But the most annoying fact about “The Ex”, “Scrubs” actor Zach Braff’s latest movie, is that it features quite an amazing cast and despite of this the movie is not funny at all. And that is really bad for a comedy! Zach Braff is joined by Amanda Peet, Mia Farrow, Charles Grodin and Jason Bateman. They are all funny people; and they were expected to be the perfect ingredients for something much more amusing than this comedy is! All these funny actors, struggling to create a comedy, which is just lame!

Excepting a couple of amusing moments, the whole movie seems to lack of any inspiration, and that is too obvious. David Guion and Michael Handelman’s script tries from time to time to achieve some sort of humor, but it immediately goes down again.

Directed by Jesse Peretz, “The Ex” tells the story of Tom Reilly (Zach Braff), a man who loses his job as a chef the same day that his kid is being born. Tom’s wife, Sofia (Amanda Peet), is a lawyer, but she will need some time of after her giving birth to a child. That is why Tom will move his family to Ohio, where his father-in-law (Charles Grodin) offers him an entry-level job in his advertising agency.

Tom will need to work under Chip Sanders, played by Jason Bateman, who is just a jerk in a wheelchair using his handicap as an excuse for his bad behavior. Adding to this he is quite interested in Sofia, his high school lover.  The inevitable happens, but even now nothing thrilling will appear.

If it weren’t for the cast, “The Ex” would be just another bad movie. But the fact that actors like Zach Braff, or Jason Bateman (“Arrested Development”) and Amanda Peet (“Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip”) weren’t able to create a decent comedy, that is just everybody’s nightmare.
