âSpider-Man 3â Is A Box Office Record Breaker

The third installment of the Spider-Man series managed to get everyone’s attention and money as well, cashing in $148 million in its first three days, according to studio estimates Sunday, breaking the opening weekend record previously held by "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest" with $135.6 million.

The movie which was released in the United States, Canada and the UK on Friday, took in $59 million in North America in its first day only.

Worldwide ticket sales total $375 million for the first six days of release, breaking the opening record previously held by 2005’s “Stars Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith” with $254 million.

Starring Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker and Spiderman and Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane,

"Spider-Man 3" shows the superhero fighting not just a new villain, Sandman, who is able to change his body into any shape of sand he sees fit, but also a darker, unknown, side of his personality while he tries to keep a balance between his love for Mary Jane Watson and his responsibilities as Spider-Man.

So far, the movie has received mixed reviews, The Washington Post wrote the film was "plain awful", while The New York Post called it "overly long and complicated.”

Newsweek on the other hand said it was "nothing if not eclectic, but somehow this ambitious mishmash works".
