Veteran actress and celebrated socialite, Zsa Zsa Gabor, is another one of the many investors to lose millions of dollars in the alleged Bernard Madoff pyramid scheme.
A lawyer acting on behalf of Ms Gabor and her ninth husband, Frederic von Anhalt, has confirmed that Gabor might have lost as much as $10 million. Mr Anhalt himself stated that they may be forced to sell their Bel-Air house, cars, artwork and even jewellery because of this business and the man in charge of it, whom he called “sick.”
Ms Gabor, who turns 92 next month, joins a very long list of investors who have reportedly been tricket by Mr Madoff , including Kevin Bacon, Hollywood director Steven Spielberg and his DreamWorks partner Jeffrey Katzenberg, as well as screenwriter Eric Roth, whose films include “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.”
In Mr. Madoff’s type of scam investors are supposed to be paid back not with legitimate gains from the stock market but with money from new investors. The scam is named after Charles Ponzi, the man who invented this kind of pyramid scheme in the early 1900s.
Ms Gabor is known to be a wealthy person, mostly due to the fact that she has been married nine times, often to very rich men, among whom Conrad Hilton, the hotelier, as well. She has a daughter with Hilton, Francesca, whom she filed a lawsuit against in 2005 for stealing $2 million by forging her Gabor’s signature to take out a loan on her Bel Air home.
The Hungarian-born actress became famous for her astonishing performances in “Moulin Rouge” and “Touch of Evil.” After that she was given a special achievement award in 1958 for being the “most glamorous actress.” Due to her much imitated accent and extravagant attitude she became one of the best known characters in Hollywood.
