A Potawatomi Zoo keeper was rushed Saturday in a South Bend, Indiana,
hospital, after being attacked by a captive leopard. Jeri Ellis was cleaning
the animal's cage when the feline attacked and provoked her several head
injuries.
The keeper was rushed out off the Zoo with the help of emergency crews, but
some of the visitors were able to see the scary sight.
Zoo officials are still investigating the incident trying to find out why Ellis
was attacked by the Amur leopard, and how was it possible for both of them to
be in the holding area, where the accident took place.
Until a final conclusion is reached, the leopard will remain
out of visitors' sight. Zoo management has also declared that none of the
visitors that where near the place of the accident were ever in danger, and
that the other cats will continue to be on exhibit for the public.
Jeri Ellis had been discharged from the St Joseph Regional
Medical Center
this Sunday, after doctors concluded that the injuries he suffered were not
serious enough to require further hospitalization. Whether Ellis who, according
to Zoo officials has worked with wild animals before without any incident, will
have the courage to clean a wild feline’s cage again, remains to be seen.
Terri DeRosa, the Zoo’s director, stated in an interview quoted by the Associated
Press, that they "work with wild animals, and that potential is always
there and people really need to be careful when they are dealing with
animals."
