Saturday marked the public debut
of San Diego Zoo’s most adorable resident: Zhen Zhen, a giant panda cub, born
August 3, 2007.
The two- hour morning viewing
started 9 a.m., when the 16.7 pound female panda cub could be admired at the
Giant Panda Research Station.
Although Zhen Zhen has not
been in the public eye since birth,
images of the cub have been available on the zoo’s web site, through a live
camera.
The San Diego’s newest panda
bear is the forth to be born here. Her parents, Bai Yun and Gao Gao, are also
residents at this zoo.
Luckily, Zhen Zhen has been
fully accepted by her mother, who has been taking good care of her cub since
birth.
The name Zhen Zhen means “Precious”
and it has been given to her on November 26, 2007, following an Internet naming
poll.
Andrew Circo, the Zoo spokesman,
said they did not expect the cub to receive as much attention as it did: “We
weren’t sure how much interest there’ll be, since we have four pandas.”
However, San Diego Zoo’s “Precious”,
previously introduced to the media on Friday, and attracted many visitors, who
lined up outside the zoo’s gates just to see her.
Zhen Zhen has only been in
public for two hours, but that amount of time will surely increase, depending
on her mom’s response: “She takes her cues from her mother, so as long as Bai
Yun is fine, she’ll be fine,” said Kathy Hawk, senior panda keeper for the zoo.
It’s been a busy morning for the
young cub, and the morning audiences couldn’t have ended any other way than
with a long nap.
