Zach Braff Preparing to Say Goodbye to Scrubs

Actor Zach Braff is bracing himself for what is to be the last season of humorous medical drama “Scrubs” on NBC.

“Scrubs” first aired in 2001 and has apparently been waiting for its cancellation ever since. This time around though, it is really happening: the sitcom’s seventh season, premiering Thursday, is also the last.

“I think that when it's over, it's really going to hit us hard,” Zach Braff, who plays lead character Dr. John Dorian, told the New York Daily News. “This has been a giant chunk of my life.”

Braff, who gained widespread appreciation for his 2004 film “Garden State,” which he wrote, directed and endowed with a Grammy award-winning soundtrack, will reprise directorial duties on this season of “Scrubs.”

“Bill (Bill Anderson, series’ creator) typically is nice and gives me episodes that have a little extra something to them so I can, you know, put my own sort of imprint on them,” Braff told the daily News.

And he says he will direct one episode that serves as homage to “The Princess Bride” that will certainly have his “imprint.”

In a message posted Sept. 26 on his official website, Braff, 32, confesses: “I think it will be really sad when the show is over, but it will probably be time for us all to move on and start the next chapter of our lives. The show has been the most fun job I can ever imagine having; going to work everyday and acting like a nerdy goofball with all your friends is a pretty ideal gig for me.”

He also reveals that four of the episodes in this season are directed by him, with four more directed by Lawrence, “so between the 2 of us, we’re directing almost half the whole season.”

“I think you will like this last year; there are a bunch of surprises. Look for the return of almost everyone who’s had a small part on the show. Including my favorite: Hooch. (Who is actually crazy…).”

Braff and Lawrence told USA Today that, knowing this is the last season, they have been careful to answer long-lingering questions, including J.D.’s impending fatherhood and Elliot's upcoming wedding (played by Sarah Chalke).

Other situations will also find closure, while some guest stars will return, including Tom Cavanagh and Elizabeth Banks. Above all however, Lawrence says the goal is to satisfy “the loyal cult audience.”

“Scrubs” can boast with its “loyal cult audience” but also with multiple Emmy and Peabody Award nominations, as well as three consecutive Golden Globe nominations for Braff.

The main cast of “Scrubs” consists of, in addition to Braff: John C. McGinley (Dr. Cox), Neil Flynn (Janitor), Sarah Chalke (Elliot), Donald Faison (Turk), Ken Jenkins (Kelso),
