Young Girl Lucky To Be Alive After Bird Flu

Amazing as it sounds, a 3-year-old girl has become the youngest person ever in China to recover from bird flu infection. She is called Peng and she was hospitalized last month in north China’s Shanxi Province, after being diagnosed with the H5N1 strain of avian influenza.

However, she was discharged on Tuesday from the No.4 People’s Hospital in Taiyuan, the provincial capital of Shanxi. She is the first of 8 people infected with avian influenza in China since the beginning of the year to recover, as the chief of Shanxi Provincial Department of Health told the media.

She got the disease from a fever, on January 7, when she was in Hunan Province, central China, visiting the family of her father, an automobile dealer. When she got back home, in Xiaoyi, Shanxi, she became seriously ill and was taken to Fenyang Hospital near her home on January 14. Afterwards, she was transferred to the Taiyuan-based Shanxi Provincial Children’s Hospital, which reported the case to the health authorities at provincial and national levels.

In order to confirm the terrifying diagnosis, she was submitted to a number of tests, and she was later confirmed as having the pathogenic bird flu strain known as H5N1 on January 17. Peng was then transferred to the No.4 People’s Hospital in Taiyuan for intensive care. She was quite a lucky girl, given that China has reported five deaths among the eight human cases of the H5N1 strain this year. Furthermore, as some analysts say, China may be facing an outbreak of bird flu among poultry already, even if the mainland government has yet to report such an incident.
