TiVo Inc., the company behind the digital video recording box, along with Nero AG of Germany will unleash a package that turns a Windows PC into a TV recorder, just like a TiVo set-top box.
The new product is called Nero LiquidTV, and comes equipped with a TiVo remote, USB digital T V tuner, as well as a customized version of the interface used by TiVo video recorders.
The package will be available through retail stores on Oct. 15 and it is said to cost $199. Nevertheless if users already have a TV tuner card, then the software-only service is $99 with one year of TiVo service included.
The TiVo software will be launched first in U.S., Mexico and Canada, but the plan is to launch it in Europe next year, including in Nero's home country, Germany, according to The Associated Press. As far as Mexico is concerned, the product will only be available online as a downloadable serial number.
It seems that Great Britain is the only European country where TiVo currently has subscribers. "It's really part of a global TiVo strategy," said Joshua Danovitz, vice president and general manager of international business at TiVo.
LiquidTV will make it possible for you to transfer shows recorded on other TiVo devices in the home to your PC’s hard drive or on an iPod or PSP. It also allows you to burn TV shows onto DVDs.
Even if other applications that can do this are also available, such as Windows Media Center this is the first time that the TiVo interface and functions have been replicated on a PC.
