The new YouTube on Television service, launched January 15th, is the section of the site with a new user interface designed for easier viewing on TV screens. Initially, YouTube on Television (www.youtube.com/tv) is available as a beta test through Sony PS3 and Nintendo Wii game consoles, in 22 countries and in 12 languages. But additional devices are likely to be added in the future.
According to the YouTube blog, YouTube for Television, "...offers a dynamic, lean-back, 10-foot television viewing experience through a streamlined interface that enables you to discover, watch and share YouTube videos on any TV screen with just a few quick clicks of your remote control."
But the greatest thing of it all finally happened: Aside from the simplified interface, YouTube's other big addition comes with Auto-Play, the ability to sequence videos into playlists. Previously, users could select one video at a time and were required to manually choose what they would watch next. With Auto-Play, users can line up as many videos as they wish, watching them all without any additional input from them.
Unfortunately, as far as video quality is concerned, don’t expect much improvement. YouTube has been working to improve its resolution lately, and even offering a form of HD, but much of what's on lacks that quality that would normally help us to totally go along with whatever we are watching.
Mind that the number two contender in the console wars is mysteriously absent from YouTube's announcement. Microsoft's Xbox 360 was not included on the partnership list. Stay tuned for further information on this one.
