YouTube announced its decision to broaden the reach of its program that allows users to click on and to purchase items related to what they are watching beyond the United States and United Kingdom. The "click-to-buy" will be launched in new countries such as Germany, Spain and the Netherlands as links to songs from the iTunes Store.

YouTube launched its "click-to-buy" E-commerce program last October offering users the chance to purchase the music they were watching. According to Peter Kafka at All Things Digital, YouTube is not satisfied with just posting links to Amazon or iTunes at the bottom of the page in these countries. The linking will be made in the form of transparent overlays that will appear within the videos.

"You may start to see click-to-buy links appearing as semi-transparent overlays that appear in the bottom of the video for a short period of time. This increased visibility should help even more people take advantage of this program," YouTube posted in its blog.

YouTube announced the expansion of its "click-to-buy" program on Wednesday and within the announcement it noted that this kind of ads helped increase the sales of Monty Python DVDs "23,000%" after the comedy launched a YouTube channel.

The move comes after online brand advertising was hit hard as a consequence of the financial crisis and YouTube’s move is one of adaptation as it tries to find new ways of posting higher earnings from e-commerce.
