Video sharing site YouTube has gained the hearts of millions
of users, but at the same time, has also created a lot of controversy regarding
the violent or sexually explicit nature of some of the videos posted by users.
But under the motto “A YouTube for All of Us,” the video
sharing site has imposed restrictions on mature content, sexually suggested
content and profanity.
From now on, any video containing pornographic images or sex
acts will be removed from the site once flagged. Furthermore, videos with
sexually suggestive - but not prohibited - content will be age-restricted.
The YouTube team wrote on a blog posting that this move will
make the collective YouTube experience even better, and will help pursue the
goal of ensuring users are viewing content relevant to them, without stumbling
upon content that is not appropriate.
As a result of that, all videos that are considered to be
sexually suggestive will be demoted from pages such as Most Viewed or Top Favorited,
due to the fact that these pages only help promoting them.
This is yet another move from Google to restrict unwanted
content on its website. Earlier in September, YouTube posted a warning in its
community guidelines meant to stop videos depicting bomb making, or graphic and
gratuitous violence from proliferating.
Furthermore, according to the Community Guidelines, users
should post gross-out videos of accidents, dead bodies or similar things intended
to shock or disgust. “YouTube is not a shock site.”
