Jim Carrey’s latest comedy, “Yes Man,” has been met with harsh criticism from the most popular and acclaimed movie reviewers in the United States. The almost unanimous opinion on “Yes Man” was that Jim Carrey’s humor was a little too outdated for today’s audience, when laughter is produced by the outstanding performances of newer actors such as Tina Fey or Steve Carell.
The movie was also compared with another comedy Jim Carrey starred in some years back, namely “Liar Liar.” The premise of “Liar Liar” was that Jim Carrey’s character could only tell the truth, no matter what he was asked. In “Yes Man,” Jim Carrey plays a guy who suffers from depression after he is left by his wife. He has trouble at his job, where he is a loan officer, and even disappoints his friends and family. He and a long-lost friend meet up and decide to attend a self-help seminar, where they are advised to say “yes” as often as possible. Jim Carrey’s character takes the advice almost literally, and his life takes a turn for the best.
The movie has so far earned $18.2 million in ticket sales over the opening weekend. The box office also featured “Seven Pounds,” the new drama starring Will Smith and Rosario Dawson, where an auditor with a deep, dark secret vows to completely change the lives of seven strangers. The movie came in second with estimated revenues of $16 million. Third place was adjudicated by the Universal Studios animation “The Tale of Despereaux,” with $10.5 million.
