Olympic champion Kristi Yamaguchi has confidently danced her way to the finale of Dancing with the Stars’ sixth season and now vies with NFL star Jason Taylor and Latino actor Cristián de la Fuente for dance floor supremacy.
Kristi Yamaguchi and professional dancing partner Mark Ballas have been an audience favorite from the very beginning. As they have impressed viewers and the judges week after week on the ABC dancing competition, it is fair to expect the title of best dancers goes to them.
Yamaguchi and Ballas, Taylor and Edyta Sliwinska and de la Fuente and Cheryl Burke will dance in the season finals at 8 p.m. Monday. The big announcement will be made the following day, during a two-hour special featuring Grammy Award winner Usher.
Yamaguchi has had years of experience to draw from for her successful performances: the sequined costumes, the excruciating workouts and rehearsals, the will power to continue and strive for improvement.
The 1992 Olympic Champion in women’s singles has continually drawn praise from the judges and votes from the fans. She tells the Associated Press that the success would not have been possible though without her professional dancer Ballas, who has become a close friend.
“I’ve spent more time with him than I have my own family in the last two months,” the ice-skater champion said.
In recent years, she had focused more on her family (she has two daughters aged 2 1/2 and 4 1/2). Lately, she has become used to having some 20 million viewers tune in each week to watch her glide on the dance floor.
Monday night, the three remaining couples will perform the cha-cha and a freestyle routine. After the third-place couple is named Tuesday, the last two pairs standing will compete one final time, performing one of their favorite routines from the season.
