During the GSMA Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, Yahoo officially announced that it is planning to release a new web-based service for mobile devices, called Yahoo Mobile.
In a nutshell, the application reunites some of Yahoo’s most popular services into one single web-based platform, available through virtually any mobile platform. It shall be interesting to see how the web giant manages to integrate all its features and services, such as mail, stock and news, into one sleek interface.
While Yahoo Mobile will be accessible through any mobile phone with a connection to the internet, a Yahoo representative announced that the company is also planning to develop specific versions for some mobile platforms. For the beginning, there will be dedicated versions of Yahoo Mobile for Symbian S60, BlackBerry OS, iPhone OS and Windows Mobile.
Marco Boerries, executive vice president at Yahoo, stated that the company expects that users will use Yahoo Mobile as their primary portal when accessing the internet. He added that people would be able to browse seamlessly through search results, social networking features, maps, financial information, email address, contacts and tasks, all of these through a neat web-based architecture.
Many of Yahoo’s existing features, such as news, email, and messenger will come along with some new services, including oneConnect, oneSearch and onePlace. Yahoo promises to deliver a speech-to-text websearch feature, a more advanced navigation service with voice assistance, along with widget integration on some devices.
It is expected that Yahoo will eventually shut down Yahoo Go, once Yahoo Mobile will prove to be stable enough. The company’s latest release in the mobile device market is currently offered as a beta version, but analysts predict that Yahoo will release the final version sooner than expected.
