Yahoo is trying to reinvent its search, and has now revealed its own version of a search tool that allows users to better organize their information, by keeping track of the sites they’re interested in, making annotations, bookmarking, and saving texts they’re interested in.
It is far from being a new idea, but Yahoo has decided to make it their own by integrating it with Yahoo Search. Rival Google had been working on a similar tool but recently gave up on it. However, Yahoo is not alone, and the competition is already spiced up by similar services, such as Diigo (which also has a social side to it).
The Yahoo Search Pad is a great idea, however, it does lack one thing: wide availability. The Search Pad is currently in testing, but is not available to all users. That, however, is likely to change in time.
All in all, the Search Pad was designed not only to make work easier for users, but also so save time and help them navigate through sites they are interested in. this is possible through the Search Pad’s intelligent way of detecting user’s research intent, through automatically collecting visited sites, and through providing simple tools for users to organize and add notes, Yahoo explained.
The reactions to Yahoo’s Search Pad have been quite optimistic, with people curious to see if Yahoo will be able to handle something that rival Google gave up on.
Larry Cornett, vice president for product of Yahoo Search, told CNET News that their hope is to help people doing research with Yahoo be more effective, which may drive more engagement or drive them to come back more often.
