Yahoo! Makes Mobile Search Faster And Easier With Voice Command

Yahoo! Inc. announced on Wednesday, at the CTIA Wireless convention in Las Vegas, a new version of its mobile search service, called Yahoo! oneSearch 2.0., which will now enable users to have a faster searching experience by using voice commands. This step is part of a new strategy to appeal to mobile consumers by offering a rich search experience with the help of Search Assist and voice-enabled search, the company said in a statement.

Since it’s launch in 2007, Yahoo! oneSearch “revolutionized mobile search by re-creating search specifically for the mobile phone, focusing on answers, not just Web links,” said Marco Boerries, Executive Vice President of Connected Life, Yahoo!. “With Yahoo! oneSearch we are fundamentally changing the way consumers use the Internet on their mobile phones.”

oneSeach will not only make text messaging easier, with the help of Search Assist, but it will also make the search experience a lot simpler, with voice-enabled commands, Yahoo! says.

Search Assist, which is also available for the iPhone, offers an easier, faster input that reduces the time to enter the search query, predictive text and contextual recommendations.

For an even easier search, the voice-enabled commands will offer users the possibility to search anything from flight numbers, to locations, Web sites and other things by simply using speech. Yahoo! says their service offers relevant result every time, unlike other mobile voice recognition methods for mobile searching previously used.

On top of that, Yahoo! wants to make search even easier by integrating “an innovative idle screen search service that makes it easier to search on your phone by integrating the search box right into the main screen,” giving simple and quick access to the Internet and Yahoo! oneSearch. In other words, you won’t need to open the browser in order to start a search, you can start it directly by using voice commands or typing. This feature will become available in the second quarter of 2008, the company said.
